January 8, 1999
Evening News (email)
A legalise cannabis campaigner, caught by an undercover police officer
smoking cannabis near Norwich Cathedral's cloisters, was yesterday ordered
to do 60 hours community service.
Jeffrey 'Jack' Girling, 54, of Magdalen Street, had denied possessing
cannabis and cannabis resin on June 17.
But he was found guilty at Norwich Crown Court yesterday.
Girling claimed he did not consider cannabis a drug, claiming instead it was
a "God given plant".
And he added he would be appealing against the conviction.
The judge said it was Girling's eighth court appearance on drug related
matters.
